Stillwater: Birthplace of Minnesota
Stillwater is historically known as the birthplace of Minnesota, following the first territorial convention in 1848 that would go on to establish Minnesota as a state. Stillwater sits on the western bank of the St. Croix River and was even named after its calm waters. Our team loves to take a stroll along the banks of the St. Croix River in Stillwater, and one of our favorite places to take a walk is along the Stillwater Lift Bridge - this bridge connects Stillwater to Houlton, WI, and was converted for pedestrian and bicycle use in 2017. Like many other landmarks in historic Stillwater, this bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 for being a resounding example of engineering and vertical lift highway bridges in the state of Minnesota. You really feel like you’re walking across a piece of history!
While strolling through historic downtown Stillwater, be sure to bring the kiddos to Teddy Bear Park. This is by far one of the most unique playground experiences in the country! With tons of various playground equipment and giant teddys to climb on, it really makes for an afternoon of fun for families, especially those with young kids.
If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Stillwater during blueberry season, we highly recommend making a trip to the Blueberry Fields of Stillwater. The window to pick berries isn’t terribly long, but there’s truly nothing better than taking home a giant bucket of blueberries to snack on and bake with.
