Elk River is truly a perfect place to call home for those that love being near to the amenities of the Twin Cities but also love the calm, wide open spaces that being just a little further out into the Minnesota countryside provides. With 41 parks, one dedicated conservation area, and 1,388 maintained acres of land, Elk River certainly has no shortage of outdoor activities and unique naturescapes.
One of our favorite parks to visit is Woodland Trails Regional Park, considered by many to be the crown jewel of Elk River parks. At 427 acres, it’s hard not to enjoy a day here no matter what your preferred outdoor activity. There are miles and miles of paved and natural trail walking options, cross-country skiing, and the newest additions to the park are a nature play area and the Woodlands archery range – the park even has access to the 4.75-mile Great Northern Trail.
One of our favorite places to bring the kids in Elk River is the Oliver Kelley Farm, where the whole family can enjoy the gorgeous scenery on the shores of the Mississippi River and get a close-up experience of the 1850s farmstead and experience the ins and outs of how a working farm functions. Kiddos can see farm animals up close and personal and learn about this amazing historical site that takes pride in preserving agriculture and maintaining sustainability.
As a locally-owned business, we love to support other small businesses in Elk River. After a long day exploring the scenic views that Elk River has to offer, we love to stop for grub at Tipsy Chicken Kitchen & Cocktails for delicious, scratch-made, farm-inspired food and drinks. You really can’t go wrong with the classics like chicken and waffles, rooster mac & cheese, shrimp and grits, and finishing it all off with a slice of sticky toffee cake.
